Discover Cha Da Thai

Walking into Cha Da Thai for the first time felt like stumbling onto a neighborhood secret that everyone somehow already knows. The aroma hits first-lemongrass, garlic, and toasted chili drifting from the kitchen-and then the easygoing vibe settles in. This spot at 420 Jonestown Rd Ste J, Winston-Salem, NC 27104, United States doesn’t try to be flashy. Instead, it focuses on what matters: honest Thai food that tastes like someone in the kitchen truly cares.

I’ve eaten Thai food across North Carolina, from Raleigh food halls to tiny strip-mall diners, and this place stands out for consistency. On one visit, I watched a cook prepping curry paste by hand, grinding chilies and spices the traditional way. That attention to process matters. According to culinary research from institutions like the James Beard Foundation, freshly prepared curry paste preserves essential oils in herbs, which directly affects flavor depth. You can taste that difference here, especially in the green curry, which balances heat with coconut richness instead of overwhelming your palate.

The menu is broad without being confusing. Classics like pad thai, drunken noodles, and tom yum soup share space with lesser-seen regional dishes. When I ordered pad thai on my first visit, I asked for medium spice and got exactly that-warm heat that builds slowly. No sugar bomb, no greasy aftertaste. It’s the kind of dish you remember later in the day, the way good meals tend to linger. Regulars in online reviews often mention reliability, and that tracks with my experience. Every return visit delivered the same flavors, same portion sizes, same friendly service.

One thing worth noting is how well Cha Da Thai handles spice customization. Capsaicin levels can vary wildly, and research published by the National Institutes of Health shows that tolerance differs significantly between individuals. Here, staff actually listen when you explain your preference. Mild stays mild, and hot actually means hot, not just extra chili flakes tossed on top. That kind of care builds trust fast, especially for diners new to Thai cuisine.

The dining room itself is casual and welcoming, making it just as easy to grab lunch solo as it is to bring a group for dinner. Families, students, and office workers all seem to rotate through, which says a lot about accessibility. While there’s one primary location, locals treat it like a go-to neighborhood diner rather than a special-occasion restaurant. That’s reflected in reviews that consistently highlight value, speed, and flavor rather than trendiness.

I once brought a friend who claimed they didn’t like Thai food. We split basil chicken and massaman curry, and by the end of the meal they were scraping the plate and asking what to order next time. Moments like that stick with you because they show how food can change minds when it’s done right. Nutrition data from organizations like the World Health Organization also backs up why Thai cuisine appeals broadly-meals often balance vegetables, lean proteins, and complex flavors without relying heavily on processed ingredients.

There are limitations worth acknowledging. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and if you’re sensitive to spice aromas, the open kitchen might be intense. Still, those are small trade-offs for food that delivers consistently. Cha Da Thai earns its reputation the old-fashioned way, through repeat visits and word-of-mouth praise. If you care about flavor, process, and a menu that respects tradition while staying approachable, this is one Winston-Salem spot that keeps proving why people come back.

  • Decided to do an early Mother's Day dinner at Cha Da Thai. I have been many times but this was the first time for the rest of the family. The service was outstanding. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The food was excellent! We didn't take pictures of the Cheese Rolls (appetizer) or the Mango Sticky Rice we shared for dessert. Everything was outstanding and we look forward to going again soon!

  • We have sweet and sour Chicken for lunch, Crunchy duck stirred fried with veggies, Pad Se Eu with beef. We ate this place often when we lived around WS 5 years ago. We loved it! And now we visit again and taste still the same from last 5 years ago. It’s amazing! I tried to eat it all but my eyes are bigger than my stomach. You guys did a great job!!!

  • Although the server was very nice, service was slow even though the place didn't seem crowded. Maybe it was an off night because other reviews were excellent so we were confused. One of the entrees, crispy duck, took an hour to come out. I think customers deserve a warning if the food is going to take that long. Compared to a few other places, the duck could've been crispier. I'm disappointed because I took family from out of town. My sister rated the pad Thai 3.5/5. There wasn't a fresh lime to squeeze over the dish. The cheese sticks and calamari were 5/5.

  • Best Thai in Winston-Salem hands down. Best Pad Thai I’ve had in a LONG time. Beef Pho is also excellent—flavorful broth and tender beef. The other Thai restaurants *really* need to step up their game. I can’t say enough about how good the food is. 10/10

  • This was the best meal that I’ve had in years. Everything we got was scrumptious! We got the Tom Kha soup with seafood, shrimp pad Thai with extra vegetables , and the appetizer spring rolls. All amazing. Get the spice tray, if you need it. It was all perfect as is. Whoever is the chef here deserves an award! The gentleman that waited on us was also such a kind young man. Amazing service. I will be back so much. Plenty of parking.
